i am recovering from injury or illness, is pilates right for me?
Before the start of any practice with we will ask you a series of questions to help you determine if pilates is appropriate for you (PAR-Q).
While pilates is a great form of exercise for most bodies because we can often work around injuries, it may not be appropriate for everyone. We may ask you not to participate if we feel that it would be inappropriate for you because of an injury or medical condition that you have declared on your PAR-Q, and may ask you to seek medical advice before you can start or continue, so that we can all be confident that we are the right fit for you in your present fitness.
How long are lessons?
All of our lessons are 50 min in duration unless otherwise noted.
When are you open?
Our studio is open 6 days a week by appointment only (we are closed Sundays). This means that if you'd like to stop by the studio to meet us and talk about your practice, it is best to arrange in advance via phone or email, to ensure that someone is in to greet you. We are closed over half term, school, or bank holidays unless otherwise noted.
When can i book lessons?
Lessons can be booked at your convenience and teacher availability, 6 days a week (we are closed Sundays). We are closed over half term, school, or bank holidays unless otherwise noted or agreed with your teacher.
I'm not sure I will like pilates, do you offer a free intro?
Unfortunately our teachers need to be paid for their time. If you want to try bePilates with no commitment, the best option is to purchase a 1-to-1 lesson.
What should I wear?
Please dress comfortably. Your clothes should allow you to stretch and move freely, but not so free that you give everyone an eyeful of bits you want covered.
Please refrain from wearing anything with zips, large buttons or anything else that could tear the upholstery or otherwise damage the equipment. You may be required to place a pad under you to work-out, should you wear such clothing, in order to keep the upholstery free from damage.
What about jewellery or watches?
It's always best to leave your valuables at home. You will be asked to remove your jewellery/watch, as our equipment could cause damage just as your jewellery/watch could damage our equipment. You are responsible for any valuables you bring into the studio.
What about footwear?
Outdoor shoes must be left in the entrance area in the storage areas provided. For hygienic reasons, you may wish to wear socks or other pilates specific footwear throughout your lesson.
Do you have lockers?
No. However, our studio has plenty of space where you will practice, for purses/bags and other valuables for you to use to keep them safe for the duration of your practice. As suggested above, it's best practice to leave anything valuable at home.
Do you have changing rooms?
Yes. We have two changing areas in the studio.
Do you have shower facilities?
How much time should I allow before my lesson?
We suggest you arrive at least 5-10 minutes before the start of your lesson in order to give you time to change and prepare for class. Please remember that we are only open by appointment, so if you are much earlier than that, you may have to wait outside until your teacher arrives.
can I bring my friend/partner/son/daughter to wait while I practice?
Unfortunately, we often have multiple lessons happening at the same time in the studio and as we do not have a separate waiting area outside of the practice areas, for the comfort of all of our students, we ask anyone waiting for you, to do so in one of the comfort of one of the many cafe’s dotting the high street.
Can I eat before class?
Like all exercise, pilates is best practiced on an empty stomach. We recommend that you do not eat for at least 2 hours prior to class. Please do drink plenty of water prior to your lesson and to bring a bottle of water with you.
Are mobile phones allowed in the studios?
Pilates places emphasis on concentration and focus. To enjoy your lesson, you will want to keep distractions to a minimum. We also ask you to respect your fellow students and turn your phone to silent when you enter the studio.
Do you run reformer classes?
Classical pilates is a system of exercises created by Joseph Pilates that is performed on many pieces of apparatus that he designed for his method. The reformer is only one piece that we use, and while your lesson(s) may include exercises on the reformer, we believe that the best results are experienced when performing pilates as it was designed.
Do you run mat classes?
For the same reason that we don't run reformer classes, we don't run mat-only classes.
What kind of equipment do you use?
We use Gratz, classical equipment built to the specifications and dimensions of the equipment created by Joseph Pilates to give you a full body, full-on challenge each and every session.
Do you train clients in their home?
Yes and no... We offer clients from all over the world to train with our teachers over Skype. So while you can practice in your home, your teacher will be on your computer or tablet. All you need is a good internet connection and a pilates mat and we can get started! This option is great for our students who want to keep up their practice while travelling or for teachers living abroad who may not have access to classical pilates teachers closer to home.
do you sell packages?
Yes. All of our teachers offer 1-to-1 and 2-to-1 lessons as a single purchase or with a small discount to those students who wish to have regular lessons over the course of a specified term. It is your responsibility to know your rights when you purchase your lessons, including the length of time in which your purchase is valid.
do you sell single group classes?
Unfortunately, pilates is not a group fitness modality and we do not offer group classes for this reason. If you would like to learn pilates in a small group setting, we offer group beginner courses (maximum 4 students) that runs over the Summer Term (next term starting in April). If you miss our start date, we recommend starting with 1-to-1 or 2-to-1 lessons until the start of our summer term.
what if I can't make it to one of the lessons in beginner course?
Unfortunately if you are not able to make it to one of the lessons in your beginner course, that lesson is lost. We price this package in such a way that even if you miss 2 out of your 11 lessons, your price per lesson would still be under £25, which is quite competitive with group fitness styled pilates in the area.
You of course have the option to make any missed lessons up as 1-to-1 tuition at standard rates.
I want to join your teacher classes but am trained by a non-classical school, is that okay?
Absolutely! We love to meet teachers from different backgrounds.
I want to train to be a teacher, can you help me?
We offer apprenticeship opportunities on a case-by-case basis for those who want to train in the classical pilates method and work with us at our studio throughout their study. As guidance, a minimum requirement to apply for an apprentice position is a minimum of 80 hours of lessons at our studio before you will be considered.
In addition, we also offer regular continuing education opportunities for qualified pilates teachers.
I'm already a mat/reformer/comprehensively trained contemporary teacher, can I bridge?
We believe that one of the reasons for choosing the classical pilates method is the systematic approach to training and teaching and so we don't offer a bridge option.
If you want to dip into some of our continuing education courses or workshops without taking on a full apprenticeship with us, you are absolutely welcome to join if you are already comprehensively trained from another provider.
In addition, you can check back from time to time for special events/workshops open to mat or reformer only teachers.
Can I hire out the studio?
On occasion, it may be possible to use our studio for special events. We have hosted successful press events and product launches in the past and are happy to work with you to make your event a success.
